"rorty [Rawrti] adj (sl) in good spirits, cheerful"
This is the way in which I undertake the
building and racing of my off-road buggies.
Elsewhere in the world, these machines are called Superlites, Desertlites, Odysseys etc. I just
call them Mini
Buggies. They are very light, and with the
right motor, quite powerful too. Figures of 420+ BHP per tonne are common!
While you're here, you may as well visit theTechnical Page,
which delves into most things technical,
including formulas, charts, calculators, data, chassis
and suspension design...I must admit though, I'm not
big on engines, 'cause they're dirty and smelly!
If you're still with me after reading the
Tech Pages, and you
fancy building your ownbuggy, you can!
Current build manuals available are
for the R6 (single-seater race buggy), the R82s (two-seater dual purpose buggy), the single-seater
R11 Stiletto II, the R21 Solo (single-seater race buggy
– currently unavailable) and the
R16 Shotgun II (two-seater dual purpose buggy).

My friend Eric took my fourteen-year-old
R5 (yellow #55 on the roof) out for a run at Heathcote Raceway with
VORBC at the end of May. The buggy had been sitting untouched for ten
years and dirty fuel plagued Eric's attempts in the first heat. He pulled into the
pits and cleaned the fuel system prior to the second heat. That did the
trick; nobody could get near him after that. Hayabusa power was no match
for good suspension and handling...
The pages
of the manuals are full of clear instructions
with supporting
illustrations
and loads of CAD drawings. These comprehensive manuals put bike-powered
buggy racing within easy reach of every
petrolhead.
You'll
need a nice big bike motor to power your buggy, so before you go running
off spending your
hard earned cash, you should check out the
Engine
Buying Guide.
The
Buggy Racing
Page has information
and Photos
of some of the other buggies and fools I race with.
There are alsoa few Buggy Moviesof some of the Club buggies.
My favourite quote from
the off-road world was uttered by one Jason Scherer
of Alamo,
California:
"We love to
come out to the events and just compete...the comodery between the
competitors is awesome..."
Gives you the shits, doesn't it?
